Founders Day 2011....

On March 24, 1876 LDS Pioneers came and settled along the Little Colorado River. That is how Joseph City came to be a town. It was the only settlement of three that were set up at the time to actually remain a town.

Now, 135 years later this town is still a small town but it is growing (slowly) and yet traditions remain strong.

Every year we have "Founder's Day."

A day in which family from out of town even, comes and celebrates.

We do it big here too.

First we start it off with a Flag Raising Ceremony and a 10k and 5k run.

Then we have a FREE breakfast at the church. This year it was pancakes. mmmm....mmmm...mmmm

Then we had a parade.

This year Jerry's Grandpa was asked to put a float together. The Miller's are famous for their "Rook" card playing and homemade ice cream. So we were going to have Grandpa and his brothers playing cards on the back of a trailer and the grandkids were going to pass out ice cream cones. Well because of some confusion in instructions it didn't happen this year. Instead, some of his great grandkids rode bikes in the parade and passed out candy.

Kaysen insisted on riding his four wheeler. I was game. I didn't want to end up pushing him down the road from getting tired legs.

Katie (his cousin) stopped suddenly in front of him and he popped a wheelie on her back tire. The crowd thought it was a real trick and Kaysen thought he was too cool and wanted to do it again and again but I told him "No" because it would eventually end in a crash.

We have a BBQ and Auction that are big hits every year. This year Jerry had to work so my Mom came to help me and spend time with us. We just got the BBQ to go and took it back to my house to enjoy.

After that we took the boys to the tracto show.

Kaysen was in heaven.

There were at least 20 tractors and many of them were "old school" ones that he loved.

And they even had tractor "drag races" and he loved watching that.

Then there were games going on at the park for kids. We were a bit too late for the games that were for my age group of kids so instead they rode a little pony.

It is the first time they have ever ridden an animal.

The both thought they were so cool.

Then there is also a 3 on 3 basketball tournament and a volleyball tournament. Which sadly I did not get to participate in this year. (maybe next year??)

I know we live in a "po dunk" (sp?) little town. But it is a town that is proud of how it was settled and proud of being "po dunk."

I'd have to say that I sure am glad we live in this "po dunk" town too.
